Professional Development for Partner SchoolsThe Get Focused Stay Focused Nonprofit has been busy since the summer, helping middle and high school teachers prepare to teach in the fall at Gateway Charter HS, Manteca USD, Mount Shasta USD, and Westwood USD. Although teachers have access to self-paced or virtual training to launch into teaching the curriculum, they often appreciate an opportunity to learn together with their colleagues and have joint planning time for implementation. Schools already implementing the curriculum at both the middle and high school level enjoy webinars on local labor market/training information to embed that up-to-date career information into their classes. If you would like to bring in-person or virtual training to your school and/or district, please reach out to Dr. Karen Miles. Supporting Career Planning and Training for YouthContinuing the work of supporting those with barriers entering into employment, the Get Focused Stay Focused Nonprofit added two new grants to its workforce development portfolio this summer. Green Futures LA HRTP is designed to address the growing workforce gap in green infrastructure by preparing young adults who face barriers to employment––including opportunity youth and justice-involved individuals. The first cohort launched last week and will train 20 participants to work as Electric Vehicle station repair technicians. An additional two cohorts supporting 35 more youth will launch in the spring. Grant funding was made available through Los The California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship one-year planning grant supports the development of new registered apprenticeships. The program serves opportunity youth ages 16–24, including young parents, former foster youth, individuals with disabilities, and youth facing educational achievement gaps or disconnection from school and work. Funding is provided by the Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Apprenticeship Standards. How much fun are Get Focused Stay Focused fundraising events? A lot!Our latest fundraising events were both fun learning opportunities: a wine appreciation and pairing class, and our 5th Annual Virtual Trivia Night. We were delighted to host sommelier Sergio D’Agustini––who shared his wisdom on different types of wine and the best foods to serve with them––at the home of Board Treasurer Jesse Hernandez. ![]() Our Trivia Night was a battle of knowledge with participants racking their brains for elusive facts. If you have never participated, consider gathering with local friends and family for a team potluck at your home, or catch up with more distant team members in your Zoom room. We look forward to seeing you at our next fundraising event! Karen Miles, Ed.D., Executive Director |
